International travellers requiring NDPS for medical use

Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances have medical uses. However, the medical use of all narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances is permitted in all countries. In India, narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances listed in Schedule I of the NDPS Rules, 1985 are prohibited.

However, international travellers may require narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances for their medical use (including some which may be prohibited in India). International travellers wishing to bring any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance may, well before their departure from their country, seek permission of the Narcotics Commissioner to import the drugs. Their application should be accompanied by the prescription and any other relevant papers. After obtaining permission, they may bring the drugs with them.
